Christian Home Educators of the Avalon seeks to provide support to homeschooling parents on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland and Labrador. We do this in a variety of ways, one of which is through our monthly support meetings for parents. At these meetings, we begin and end by praying for each other. These are informal meetings that usually happen in a home, where parents can seek advice and information from more experienced homeschoolers.
Because CHEA is a co-op, we work together to come up with plans and activities for our children and share responsibilities. We plan field trips together and also plan larger events that usually centre around different holidays (Christmas, Easter, Valentine's Day, etc.). In addition to field trips, we generally meet every Friday afternoon for what we call "Friday Funday". These events often happen at local playgrounds and churches that graciously allow us to use their facilities, but we are autonomous from them. Churches do not provide supervision or oversight. Parents stay at these gatherings and are responsible for their own children. It is a fun and informal time for everyone!
Christian Home Educators of the Avalon is a registered co-op with the Homeschool Legal Defence Association (HSLDA) of Canada. HSLDA is a non-profit organization devoted to protecting, empowering, and advancing home education in Canada. They provide legal services and professional homeschool support to help their member families flourish.
If you are a part of CHEA, you can receive a discount on a personal membership with HSLDA. Click here for more information about HSLDA.
Membership with CHEA is $20 per family for the school year to cover various administrative costs. Those who would like to be members of CHEA are asked to please read our Statement of Faith, and simply respect these values when you attend our gatherings.
If you would like to become a member of CHEA, contact us for a copy of our registration form.
We look forward to hearing from you!
